Derby Closes Parks, Playing Fields

DERBY — In an effort to slow the pace of COVID-19 person-to-person transmissions, the City of Derby has closed all city-owned parks.

The order is effective immediately.

The following was announced on Mayor Richard Dziekan’s Facebook page:

As we continue to navigate our new reality amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, it is important that local government officials help set the tone to mitigate the spread of the virus.

In accordance with this idea, Derby will be following the lead of Seymour, Ansonia and Oxford and closing our public parks until further notice, effective immediately.

This includes:

- Payden Park (baseball, football/soccer field and track),

- Bradley School court and playground, Irving School court and playground,

- Witek Park Soccer Field

— The picnic grove and basketball courts off Nutmeg Avenue

As of right now, the Derby Greenway will remain open, but we strongly encourage you to practice social distancing if you chose to utilize it.

These restrictions will remain in place until further notice.”

Questions should be directed by email or telephone to Derby City Hall. The phone number is (203) 736‑1450. Click this link for the website.

The City of Derby does not have jurisdiction over Osbornedale State Park in west Derby. That property is owned by the state.

From the state’s park website:

NOTICE: COVID-19 UPDATE: The trails and grounds of Connecticut State Parks and Forests are open for solitary outdoor enjoyment. If you plan to visit a park, it should be for solitary recreation, not group activities. Please plan ahead as many amenities and indoor facilities are closed, and visitors must practice social distancing.
