A two-car crash on Academy Hill Road in Derby Tuesday morning sent two people to the hospital.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the area of 99 Academy Hill Road on a report of a head-on two-car accident about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to Derby Police Lt. Sal Frosceno.

They arrived to find that one car, a pickup truck, had rolled over in the crash.

In addition, the drivers of both vehicles, the pickup truck and a minivan, needed to be extricated by rescue crews.

Frosceno said the drivers were the only occupants in each vehicle.

Derby firefighters, with assistance from crews from Ansonia and Shelton, used Hurst tools -— the so-called jaws of life” -— to free the women from the wreckage.

Both women were taken by Ansonia Rescue Medical Service to Yale-New Haven Hospital on trauma alerts with presently undetermined injuries,” Frosceno said.

The accident is under investigation with the assistance of the Shelton and Trumbull Police Department accident reconstruction teams,” Frosceno said.
