Derby police are investigating a one-car crash that damaged about 25 feet of fence along Main Street.
The crash was reported about 1 a.m. Sunday on Main Street across from Elizabeth Street.
The vehicle, a full-size pick-up truck, took out a section of a chain-link fence where Derby groups hang banners to publicize events. The last banner was promoting the successful “Haunted Lantern Tour” which took place Saturday night.
The Derby Fire Department Chief Thomas Lenart, Jr. said the vehicle hit a concrete structure before hitting the chain-link fence. Luckily, the truck did not fall down the steep hill above the city’s walking trail.
The driver, who was not identified, was taken to an area hospital.
Derby police offered the following information:
“Police are continuing to investigate a one car motor vehicle accident in which approximately 25 (feet) of fencing was damaged on the south side of Main Street.”
The Main Street crash occurred about six hours after an 8‑year-old boy was struck by a car on Elizabeth Street, just up the road.
Later Sunday, at about 12 p.m., Derby ambulance and fire crews responded to a two-car wreck at the intersection of Route 34 and Chapel Street.
Firefighters used Hurst tools (the ‘jaws of life’) to free an elderly woman from one of the vehicles. Luckily, she was not injured, firefighters said.
