First quarter report for the Derby Fire Department, covering January, February, and March:
Training:
More than 130 members have completed their 2017 annual required training on Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazardous Materials Response, and Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.
The training is required for all members of the department and consists of 4‑hour online lessons, then a 2‑hour classroom session, and finally a 2‑hour practical session. All totaled, members have spent over 1,040 hours completing this training.
In addition to the annual training, members have completed another 1,820 hours in fireground operations training on different topics such as forcible entry, ground ladders, and fire attack.
Averaged out, members of the DFD have conducted 22 hours of training for this quarter.
Community Events:
Our members continue to assist the community. For the second year we are proud to have worked with the American Red Cross to distribute more than 100 free smoke alarms to resident of our city.
We have conducted fire safety classes at some of the schools and elderly housing throughout the city.
Emergency Responses:
The Derby Fire Department has responded to 140 calls for service since the beginning of the year.
