Derby FD Week In Review

Derby firefighters responded to a minor fire at the Sons of Italy on High Street late Thursday.

Derby Fire Department Chief Mike Goodman said firefighters were called to the property just before 12 a.m.

People in the building were getting ready for a Saturday night fundraiser when they smelled smoke.

A fire had started in a storage room, Goodman said. The fire marshal is investigating whether a problem with the hot water heater was to blame.

The people in the building were able to use an extinguisher on the fire, and Derby firefighters put out flames that remained.

There were no injuries and minimal damage, Goodman said.

The incident was the third in a series of high-profile but thankfully minor calls for the Derby Fire Department this week.

Firefighters responded to calls for service at both Derby Middle School and the Bradley School April 26.

The following information was posted on the Derby Fire Department Facebook page:

At 1132am NWPS transmitted a box alarm at the Derby Middle School for a report of smoke in the main office. The staff at DMS quickly evacuated the students to safe location across the street in the high school. Units arrived on scene and discovered a smoking computer monitor in the main office.

At 1423hrs NWPS transmitted a still alarm for a fuel oil spill at Bradley School. Units arrived on scene and discovered that the fuel oil company accidentally spilt a small amount of fuel oil outside the school while making their delivery. The spill was covered with an absorbent material and the school contacted a cleanup company.”
