Derby Felon Faces New Federal Charges

A Derby man with a long list of felony convictions faces federal charges for allegedly carrying a gun in his car.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Albert Lopez, 41, already has a long list of state and federal convictions on his wrap sheet.

Some of the previous convictions include: second-degree assault with a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, conspiracy to distribute cocaine, possession of contraband by an inmate and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

His latest charge stems from an incident April 2, when he was pulled over by state police for a routine motor vehicle violation.

Troopers said they found a stolen 9mm Luger in the car, along with 13 rounds of ammunition.

State police charged Lopez with stealing a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal possession of a firearm — and failing to drive in the proper lane.

It was unclear where the traffic stop took place, but charges are pending in state Superior Court in Enfield.

Since Lopez was already on federal probation, a probation officer used the state police arrest to lodge a probation violation report against Lopez.

A grand jury convened and returned an indictment Wednesday accusing Lopez of one count of a possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon.

It is a violation of federal law for a person previously convicted of a felony offense to possess a firearm or ammunition that has moved in interstate or foreign commerce, according to the U.S. Attorney.

Lopez faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
