DERBY — The Derby Fire Department collected $1,705.16 that will go toward the fundraising effort underway to send four high school track champs to the national championships.

The department did so by holding a boot drive Saturday, giving passing motorists a chance to donate money.

Derby recently won a state championship in track and field. Derby’s 800 Sprint Medley Relay of Brandon McLean, Bryan McLean, Zerion Montgomery and Kanye Bailey qualified for the Outdoor National Championships in Oregon.

But they need to raise money to make the once-in-a-lifetime experience come true.

From the Derby Running Club:

Our kids are beyond excited to have recently qualified to participate in this prestigious event. With the meet taking place on the West Coast, however, we need to raise more money than ever before in order to make this happen.

Your donations to the Derby Running Club will help cover the cost of transportation, entry fees, lodging and food for our athletes. This experience provides our athletes with the opportunity to compete at the highest level possible in high school track and field.”
