Derby GOP: Lawmaker’s Scheduled Appearance, Use Of School, Is ‘Disconcerting’

I find it disconcerting that the Derby Democrats would welcome Matt Lesser to speak at Derby High School tonight.

This is a man who last week attacked Themis Klarides on the issue of equal pay. Because she doesn’t support a bill she doesn’t agree with, Matt Lesser accused her of bigotry. This is a pretty strong accusation considering Klarides’ track record of championing gender equality.

According to Klarides, the House Republicans in CT actually pay their female staffers an average of almost $4,000 more than their male staffers. At the same time, Democrats pay their female staffers 15 percent less than the males.

While it is not against any rules in our charter, the fact that Derby High School is being used for a political party rally just doesn’t sit well with me.

The gym and auditorium should be used for events the people of Derby can be proud of, like last week’s Athletic Hall of Fame Induction.

On that note, congratulations to this year’s inductees!
