DERBY – Registered Republicans in Derby are scheduled to head to the polls on Tuesday to nominate a candidate for mayor.
Alderman Gino DiGiovanni is the officially endorsed candidate of the Derby Republican Town Committee. Incumbent Mayor Richard Dziekan challenged that endorsement by collecting enough signatures to trigger a primary.
The winner of Tuesday’s primary will appear on Republican line during the municipal election on Tuesday, Nov. 7. However, if DiGiovanni wins Tuesday’s primary, Dziekan’s name will still be on the ballot because Dziekan collected the signatures needed to run as a petitioning candidate.

The Contest
This is the first local Republican primary since The Valley Indy launched in June 2009.
The contest is getting attention from the media because Alderman DiGiovanni currently has federal charges pending for entering the U.S. Capital during the Jan. 6 insurrection in Washington, D.C. Click here for a previous Valley Indy story.
Mayor Dziekan is running for his fourth term. Click here for a Valley Indy story about Dziekan’s decision to run again.
Alderman DiGiovanni said he’s running because Derby needs new leadership. Click here for a previous Valley Indy story.
There are two other candidates on the ballot in November: The Derby Democratic Town Committee nominated Joseph DiMartino, and Sharlene McEvoy collected enough signatures to get on the ballot as a petitioning candidate.
