Derby Hits Fireworks Goal

An impulsive question from the Second Ward Alderman helped put Derby over the top in its fundraising for the July 2 fireworks show.

Derby Mayor Anthony Staffieri announced last year the city would not spend the $11,500 needed to fund the fireworks.

The city’s fire department immediately started to raise money to save this year’s show.

They raised several thousand dollars. Meanwhile, Derby business owners kicked in cash as well.

The city’s fundraising goal was reached last week, when the owners at Archie Moore’s on Elizabeth Street donated $2,500 for the cause — and Naugatuck Savings and Loan kicked in another $1,000.

The Archie Moore’s money came after Second Ward Alderman David Lenart told the restaurant’s manager about how the city was a little short of its goal.

I said we were a still a little short and asked if they could help out,” Lenart said. They were immediately positive.”

The donation comes from Archie Moore’s owners Robert Fuchs, Jonathan Ressler and Todd Ressler.

Their generosity and willingness to help us continue this tradition deserves our sincere expression of appreciation,” Staffieri said in a press release. Archie Moore’s has made a substantial investment in our city and now they are investing in our tribute to the independence of our country.”

Staffieri also thanked Bill Nimons of Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan for its donation.

The fire department raised about $3,200 for the fireworks show, according to information distributed last week from City Hall.

When you have so many dedicated volunteers, all of whom have great enthusiasm for Derby, it is just in the asking of them and they respond,” Fire Commissioner Kelly Curtis said in a press release. It is our honor to be part of this effort and each and every firefighter will stand a little taller on July 2 realizing they have been a major part of the celebration of our country.”
