DERBY — Mayor Rich Dziekan and the city’s Board of Aldermen & Alderwomen honored high school track coach Nick DiLuggo, who was recently named the 2019 – 2020 Indoor Track Coach of the Year by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association.

DiLuggo was given a proclamation by the city, which was read into the record by Mayor Dziekan, who noted the coach and educator is highly regarded in the Derby community and a great role model for the city’s youth.

DiLuggo has coached cross-country, along with indoor and outdoor track teams.

He’s coached five Class S Championship teams: two in cross country, one in indoor track, and two in outdoor track. DiLuggo has coached 13 Naugatuck Valley League championship teams, and he’s coached individual champions at the league, state, and New England levels of competition. DiLuggo is also a five time All-Area Coach.

DiLuggo received a round of applause after Dziekan read the proclamation aloud at the Feb. 13 Aldermen & Alderwomen meeting.

The coach thanked Derby for supporting the high school teams.

The board has been generous in a lot of different ways over the years in honoring and supporting our teams, and we are really appreciative,” DiLuggo said. We just want to keep the train rolling and keep things going in the right direction.”

DiLuggo also thanked the student athletes, calling them most important.

(They) do their best to represent this small city, this great city. One thing I love about this job is that they’ve proven they can compete with anybody,” DiLuggo said.

The coaches association will officially acknowledge DiLuggo at an awards ceremony scheduled for May 7 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington.
