Derby Junior Midget Cheerleaders Will Get Championship Rings

Derby Aldermen voted Thursday to give championship rings to a team of championship-winning Pop Warner cheerleaders.

The team won first place in its Junior Midget division at the Pop Warner national championships held Dec. 3 to 7 at ESPN Wide World of Sports in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

The total cost of the championship rings will be $3,900. Championship rings were awarded in the past to Derby’s wrestling team.

The Junior Midget squad is made up of 17 girls between the ages of 12 and 14.

The girls competed against 12 other Junior Midget teams in the level three medium division and received a top score of 86.6, edging out a squad from East Lynn, Mass., which scored an 86.32.

Each girl on the squad will receive a ring.

The Junior Midget cheerleaders are previous winners of the state championship and the Southern Connecticut championship.

Aldermen also honored the team at their meeting last month.
