Derby Kid Wows ‘Em With FunGuy (‘Fungi’) Pizza

Arthur Newberg, you’re the Bradley School’s Top Chef!

Arthur, 8, saw his FunGuy” specialty pizza pie come to life Tuesday night at Antonio’s, a new restaurant in Ansonia.

On Thursday, the restaurant will donate 20 percent of its sales to the Bradley School as part of an ongoing fundraiser.

In an effort to spread the word about the fundraiser, Bradley students were asked to invent a pizza and write an essay about it.

Arthur won and made his creation at Antonio’s Tuesday with help from pizza chef Wendal Ramos.

Arthur’s creation included mushrooms, meatballs and sausage.

He named the pie FunGuy Meat Pie”

FunGuy” as in fungi,” because that’s the way the minds of 8‑year-old boys work.

I always think of fungus as a guy thing,” Arthur, 8, said, explaining the play on words. So I made my pizza fungi’”

The restaurant has held similar fundraisers for other Valley schools, including Derby High School, St. Mary-St. Michael School, Emmett O’Brien Technical School and Prendergast School in Ansonia.

Antonio’s owner Chris Setaro said the word play made Arthur’s pie the clear winner.

The pie will be served as the dinner special Thursday night.

Other students who entered their own creations can bring their essays with them and order up their special pies too, Setaro said.

The second place winner was fourth-grader Xavier Ibrahim, who named his pie X‑Man’s Dragonball Pizza Deluxe” and threw on hot cherry peppers, fresh garlic and pepperoni.

Third-place winner was third-grader Claire Douglas, who named her pie The Bradley Special” and chose toppings that coincide with the school’s colors: Broccoli for green, and onions for white.

Bradley School Principal Christine DiGrazia said about 50 students entered the voluntary contest, and she chose 13 finalists to move forward to final judging by Setaro.

DiGrazia said all money raised from the Antonio’s night will help pay for programs at the elementary school.
