Derby Man Arrested In Internet Sex Sting

State police say a Derby man arranged a meeting with a 14-year-old girl he met over the Internet.

When he arrived at the meeting place in Meriden, Joseph Ganim, 41, was met by state police detectives instead.

The 14-year-old girl was an undercover state trooper. State police arrested Ganim Tuesday morning for criminal attempt to impair the morals of a minor, criminal attempt at second-degree sexual assault and criminal attempt to entice a minor.

Ganim allegedly made sexual comments in a chat room discussion with the undercover state trooper. He then asked to meet her at a Meriden laundromat for a sexual encounter, police said.

Police said Ganim arrived at the laundromat at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. State police detectives from the Computer Crimes Unit were waiting for him.

They also received a search warrant for Ganim’s home. That led to charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Ganim was scheduled to be arraigned at Superior Court in Meriden on Wednesday morning.

The man arrested shares the name of a former Bridgeport mayor.
