Shelton police arrested a Derby man Thursday on charges he stole $90,000 worth of high end jewelry.
Most of the stolen jewelry was recovered after the man, Cody Ives, tried to sell the loot at a business Thursday, according to police.
Ives, 26, of Seventh Street, was charged with third-degree burglary and first-degree larceny. He posted a $100,000 bond Thursday and is scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby Aug. 3.
The burglary — of a home in Huntington — was reported to police July 11, Detective Ben Trabka said Friday.
On Thursday, a business owner who Ives was trying to sell the jewelry to alerted police, who set up surveillance. Trabka said the business did not want to be identified.
An acquaintance of Ives’ was with him at the time — and was initially detained by police — but detectives determined he wasn’t involved in the burglary, Trabka said.
The jewelry will be held by police until Ives’ case is disposed of in court.
While investigating the case, Shelton and Derby police also found a large number of illegal pills at Ives’ Derby home. His girlfriend, Tiffany Cagganello, 25, was arrested by Derby police on drug charges.
Police said the narcotics investigation is ongoing.
