A Derby man was sentenced to six years in federal prison Friday for possessing a firearm while under supervised released for an earlier conviction.
Albert Lopez, 42, was caught with a loaded Luger pistol in his waistband after a traffic stop for a motor vehicle infraction on April 2, 2011.
Lopez already had a long list of state and federal convictions on his rap sheet, including: second-degree assault with a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of contraband by an inmate.
He posted bond after his arrest with the weapon — and then didn’t show up for his next court date, according to a press release from the feds. He was nabbed by a fugitive task force about two weeks later.
It is a violation of federal law for a convicted felon to possess a firearm or ammo.
This is the second time Lopez has been convicted of carrying a gun while being a felon. He previously served two years in prison.
U.S. District Judge Stefan R. Underhill sentenced Lopez Friday to 72 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.
