DERBY – Gary Parker was re-appointed as Derby Fire Department Commissioner and Thomas DeGennaro was appointed the chairman of the Derby Board of Police Commissioners, Mayor Joseph DiMartino announced last week.

Parker held the position in former Mayor Richard Dziekan’s administration and was previously the director of the Derby Department of Public Works.

Gary is a former fire chief and well respected in firefighting circles well beyond the City of Derby,” Mayor DiMartino said in a prepared statement. His vision and spirit of collaboration are what is needed to navigate the complicated waters of volunteer firefighting. He has the respect of the Fire Department because he has served in all of the line positions. I look forward to his stewardship of our beloved Derby Fire Department.”

The mayor also re-appointed Thomas Lenart Sr. and Michael Gloade to the three-member Derby police commission.

DeGennaro is a former inspector with the state’s attorney’s office. He is now the chairman of the police commission. DeGennaro is a former Derby police officer and he was chairman of the police commission from 2013 to 2017.

Tom DeGennaro represents capable and compassionate leadership of the Police Commission. I trust his judgment and respect his sense of fairness in dealing with the sensitive matters that come before the civilian leadership of the Police Department.” DiMartino said.

Lenart was the previous chairman under Mayor Dziekan. He is the chief of the Storm Ambulance Corps.

Gloade is currently the chief of the Derby Fire Department.

Both Commissioner Lenart and Commissioner Gloade acted in a non-partisan manner on the Police Commission and they represent the City well in this capacity,” according to the mayor.

Mayor DiMartino was elected in November 2023 and took office in December.
