The case against an Ansonia man accused of murdering a relative outside a Derby bar was continued Tuesday at Superior Court in Milford.
Cordaryl Silva, 25, appeared briefly Tuesday before Judge Frank Iannotti, nodding to family members as he entered the courtroom.
His lawyer, Lawrence Hopkins, asked Iannotti to continue the case to Oct. 10, saying he’d have a lot of material from prosecutors to review before then.
“There’s a lot of discovery that’s on its way in,” Hopkins said.
Iannotti granted the request and continued the case, after which Silva waved to his family and left the court room.
Afterward, Iannotti noticed Silva had not yet entered a plea in the case, so Hopkins entered a “pro forma” not guilty plea — a routine procedural step — on Silva’s behalf.
Silva faces a single charge of murder in connection with the May 12 shooting death of Javon Zimmerman, a distant cousin, in the parking lot outside RJ’S Cafe in Derby.
Six days after the killing, police picked up Silva on an unrelated probation violation charge and held him in lieu of $250,000 bond. When due in court to appear in that case about a month later, Silva was served with a warrant charging him with murder.
His bonds now total more than $2 million. According to state Correction Department records he is currently housed at Suffield’s MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution, a high/maximum security prison.
The arrest warrant charging Silva remains sealed from public view, though weeks after the shooting, Ansonia police revealed that Zimmerman had been a main target of a drug investigation that resulted in the the arrest in June of nine people on gun and weapons charges.
After Silva was charged with murder, the Valley Indy learned that he had been feeding information to Ansonia police about the drug-dealing crew, ranging from where the crew allegedly stashed crack cocaine on High Street in Ansonia to the location of a .45 caliber handgun on Cottage Street in Derby.
