Both the Derby Board of Aldermen and the city’s tax board have agreed to fund a $13,000 renovation to Derby Little League’s Uluski Field.
The votes were unanimous.
Work on the field, which is off Nutmeg Avenue near Derby High School, could begin next week, according to Rob Hyder, a Derby Little League official who made presentations recently to the city’s capital planning committee, the Board of Aldermen and the Board of Apportionment and Taxation.
The allocation will allow the field to be rebuilt and for sprinklers to be installed.
A contingent of Derby Little League parents and players attended an Aldermen meeting Sept. 26 asking elected officials to green light the project.
It received unanimous approval.
The field needs to be rebuilt because it hasn’t been refurbished in years. The infield is uneven, which causes wild bounces and presents a danger to young runners.
There’s a sharp dip near home plate, which makes sliding into home from third base difficult.
Derby Little League posted a message on its Facebook page Monday (Oct. 7) thanking public officials for supporting the expenditure, which will be coming from the city’s capital plan.
“Derby Little League would like to thank Keith McLiverty (Treasurer), Derby’s Capital Planning Commission, the Board of Aldermen, and the Board of Apportionment & Taxation for all unanimously approving our request to make Uluski Field safe for our kids.
Construction is expected to begin next week to ensure Uluski Field is ready for Opening Day in April. A sprinkler system will be installed, along with Kentucky blue grass sod on the infield.”
