Derby police are looking for the owner of a sedan that was found in the Housatonic River.

On Jan. 15, city police, state police and a dive team from the Shelton Police Department fished a submerged Toyota Camry from the river, just off O’Sullivan’s Island under the Route 8 bridge connecting Derby to Shelton.

The vehicle had been spotted earlier by bridge inspectors. Divers had checked out the car to make sure no people were inside, then police came back later to haul it out.

The vehicle is a Toyota Camry, and, based on debris, police estimate it was in the water in excess of a year,” Derby police spokesman Lt. Sal Frosceno said in an email.

Derby police are working with the state Department of Motor Vehicles to track down owner information.

It’s possible the car was stolen and dumped.

Anyone with information should call the Derby Police Department at 203 – 735-7811.

All calls can remain confidential, Frosceno said.
