Derby Police Respond To Mental Health Crisis On Caroline Street

DERBY — Police persuaded a man to give up after a two-hour standoff on Caroline Street on May 14.

According to a Derby police Facebook post, police were sent to a residence on Caroline Street after receiving a report of a man having a mental health crisis.

The individual refused to exit the apartment and barricaded himself inside,” police said.

Officers were able to talk to the man using a phone. A blockade was set up in the area to protect the public, police said. Officers from Shelton also responded.

With the assistance of a Shelton PD negotiator, officers were able to persuade the male to exit the apartment. At that time he was safely taken to an area hospital, without any physical altercation, for a mental health examination,” according to the post.

Police cleared the scene at about 5 p.m.
