Derby Receives Housing Grant

Derby will be receiving a $54,914 federal housing grant, U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro announced Thursday.

The money will go to the Derby Housing Authority, where it will be used to develop plans to help struggling families get back on their feet” financially, according to a statement from DeLauro.

The grant helps people renting from HUD housing to increase economic security and self-sufficiency” to obtain jobs, according to a description of the program available here.

These critical funds will help those who are struggling, especially during these tough economic times, by providing individuals with the skills and experience they need to find a job and earn a living wage,” DeLauro said.

Steven Nakano, of the Derby Housing Authority, said the money will be used locally to help people who have Section 8 vouchers hook up with job training, even enroll in college. The Derby program also helps people who are trying to secure a mortgage to purchase their first home.

Whatever funding we an get to continue this program, we are grateful for,” Nakano said.

Twenty-three people in Derby are enrolled in the program.
