Some Valley residents cried while others bowed their heads as a chorus sang songs for fallen soldiers during a Veterans Day observance on the Derby Green Wednesday.
The Rev. Janusz Kukulka from Saint Mary’s Church opened with a Veterans Day prayer.
“Today we honor our veterans, worthy men and women who gave their best when they were called upon to serve and protect their country,” Kukulka said.
Ray Gagne, Vice Commander of the American Legion’s John H. Collins Post No. 24, rang a bell at 11 a.m. to honor the end of World War I.
Life-long Derby resident Clarence Douglass, a World War II veteran, and played “Taps” on his bugle during the service.
Douglass served under General George Paton and wore his French Legion of Honor pin that he was awarded from France.
He served in five battles in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge.
Angelo Dirienzo, a Korean War veteran, was the guest speaker. He spoke about distinguished veterans from the lower Naugatuck Valley. Dirienzo is also a former Derby schools superintendent.
“This is wonderful and it just brings out the love we have for our brothers and sister,” Dirienzo said.
