Derby Resident Supports Dog Park

Don’t have grant money? Then sell ads!

That was the advice Tuesday night from long-time Derby resident Harvey Finkel.

Finkel spoke to an Aldermen subcommittee to voice his support for a dog park in the city.

Elected officials are investigating the idea, but still haven’t committed to it one way or the other. Click here for the first story we published on the idea.

Finkel said he travels 13 miles to use a dog park in Hamden, where there is a popular dog park run by R-DOG,” which stands for Responsible Dog Owners’ Group.”

R-DOG, launched in 2000, is a registered, non-profit organization who helped raise $10,000 of the $30,000 needed to build a park in Hamden.

Finkel said Derby should explore whether area businesses — such as veterinarians and pet supply stores — would be interested in purchasing space on signs that could hang in a dog park.

It doesn’t have to be pet-related. It could be any type of advertising,” he said.

He suggested prices ranging from $600 for one year to $1,200 for three years.

Finkel also suggested selling bricks that would list the name of donors, such as was done at the Derby Riverwalk. Benches with donors’ names is another idea, Finkel said.

He said dog parks are good for communities, because they become a place for residents to meet and socialize.

I would certainly use it and some of my neighbors would as well,” Finkel said.

The elected officials accepted Finkel’s suggestions without comment.

Finkel made his comments during the public portion part of the meeting. The issue did not come up again.
