Derby School Board Budget Vote Tuesday

The Derby school board is scheduled to meet Tuesday (March 15) to finalize a spending plan for the 2011 – 2012 school year.

The budget will then go to the Derby Board of Apportionment and Taxation, whose members will decide on a final dollar amount to give to the schools.

The budget proposed by school Superintendent Stephen Tracy has recommended an $18.9 million budget to run the schools next year.

That’s a $1.23 million — or roughly 6.9 percent — increase over the current budget.

The budget includes nine layoffs, including six teachers. In addition, the budget will cut the district’s full-day kindergarten program to a half-day program.

The school board’s meeting is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. in the cafetorium at Derby Middle School.

At the last school board meeting, members were stuck trying to find a way to trim Tracy’s budget request.

The thought was a 6.9 percent increase just won’t fly with the city’s tax board.

The school board ended that previous meeting without taking action.

Prior to ending the meeting, the school board was considering:

  • Adding $39,683 to the budget to restore sports programs slated to be eliminated. That would bring the budget-to-budget increase to 7.02 percent.
  • Reduce curriculum development by $40,000
  • Reduce summer school by $30,000
  • Reduce maintenance overtime by $40,000
  • Reduce spending on postage by $5,000

If the school board accepts these changes Tuesday without making more changes, next year’s school budget would total $18,864,855.

That is a 6.37 percent — or $1.13 million — increase over the current spending plan.
