Derby Storms Rescue Man Trapped Under Bridge

A man is in the hospital after falling down an embankment and spending the night under the James B. Atwater Bridge in Derby.

The man was spotted by people on the nearby Derby Greenway at about 10 a.m. Monday.

Storms Chief David Lenart said Storm members had to initiate a rope rescue to pluck the man out.

The man had fallen into down the embankment sometime late Sunday or possibly overnight Monday. The bridge is over the Naugatuck River, near Whiskey’s, a bar.

Lenart declined to describe the nature of the man’s injuries, but said he was conscious when first responders found him.

He was taken to a trauma center at St. Raphael’s Hospital, Lenart said.

Initial radio dispatches indicated the man suffered a back injury.
