Derby Student Recognized For Good Citizenship

Derby’s Board of Education opened its meeting Thursday (April 25) by honoring one of its own students.

Bradley School Principal Christine DiGrazia presented Steffan MacDonald, a fifth-grader at the school, with a Good Citizenship Award for helping out a younger child this past winter.

A first-grader named Olivia got off the school bus along with Steffan and others, but it was the wrong bus stop.

Steffan said he realized something was amiss when Olivia started to cry.

He ran to get his mother, and returned to find that someone else was also helping her get in contact with her mother.

“She was returned safely,” DiGrazia said.

Chantal Gerckens, whose children attend Derby schools, read a message Olivia’s mother sent.

“You saved Olivia from any possible dangers,” she wrote to Steffan.
