On Feb. 12, student and faculty members of the Derby Middle School Running Club participated in the four-mile Stratford YMCA Sweetheart Run.
Derby Middle School student runners included seventh graders Rachel Markoya, Charles Sampson, Amber Schlemmer, John “Jack” Peccerillo, Antonio Prizio, Garrett Kichar, and Gabriella Prizio.
Derby Middle School teacher runners included Shelley Sheridan (special education), Ryan Jockers (english/language arts), Michael Gozzo (social studies), Megan Arsenault (paraprofessional), and Jason Cebula (physical education). They were joined by Jenny Ames (Irving Literacy Specialist) and Rahul Samanta (District Information Technology Department).
Results
DMS Physical Education teacher Jason Cebula finished third in a field of 236 runners with a time of 23:28.
Winning first place in their age group in the team competition, were student runners Garret Kichar and Gabriella Prizio. Placing second in the team division in their age group were seventh graders Antonio Prizio and Amber Schlemmer, with Charlie Sampson and Rachel Markoya finishing third.
The Running Club is moderated by DMS teachers Shelley Sheridan, Michael Gozzo, and Jason Cebula. It was started in November 2010 as a continuation of the Fall Cross Country team. The goal is to promote a lifelong love of fitness.
