DERBY – Earlier this month the Derby Board of Education honored four students with CABE Student Leadership Awards.
CABE stands for the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education.
The students honored are:
* Derby Middle School students Scarlett Tamay and Wilfredo Castillo
* Derby High School students Jessica Gerckens and Alexandra Mraz
“These students received this award for their leadership, more specifically in the areas of taking on challenges, ability to make difficult decisions, concern for others, ability to work well with others, and diplomacy,” according to a prepared statement from Derby Public Schools.
Derby Middle School Principal Rachael Caggiano congratulated Scarlett and Wilfredo for their achievements.
“You both are leading in and outside of the classroom. Your futures are so bright, can’t wait to see where this journey brings you,” she said.
Derby High School Principal Jennifer Olson said Jessica and Alexandra are outstanding leaders who made a difference at Derby High School.
“Whether it is in the classroom, on a sports team, the Student Council Executive Board, or any of the many extracurricular clubs and activities they participate in, Jessica and Alexandra stand out,” Olson said.
Olson said Jessica is the Derby High School Student Council President. She was appointed the student representative to the Derby Board of Education. She prepared a monthly report to share at school board meetings.
“Jessica handled this role with confidence, poise and professionalism,” Olson said.
Alexandra’s efforts helped to expand the Derby High School girls wrestling program.
“Her skill and leadership not only elevated the program but also helped break down barriers for a sport that is underrepresented by women,” Olson said.
Derby Board of Education Vice-Chairperson Melissa Mongillo said she was honored to present the award to the young leaders.
Derby Board of Education Chairman Jim Gildea said the students are “among the best that the school system has to offer.”
Derby Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Conway said the students face challenges head-on, make tough decisions and demonstrate a genuine care for others.
“Their dedication to excellence sets a shining example for our entire district, the great city of Derby and this family,” Conway said in a prepared statement.
The awards were announced at a school board meeting on May 7.
