DERBY — The city’s tax board transferred $10,000 Tuesday to cover any overtime costs that could be incurred by Derby Public Works employees battling this year’s winter storms.
The money was covered within the existing Derby Public Works budget. The board, during a meeting online Tuesday, voted to move the money from a DPW maintenance account to the DPW’s overtime account.
DPW Director Ed Armeno and the tax board are being proactive here. Weekend storms have depleted the OT budget. This money is meant to pay overtime should another storm hit.
If there’s a second storm, the DPW would have to go to the tax board and ask for money that isn’t within its budget.
The tax board also voted to create a line in the city budget to record donations meant for the Sterling Opera House on Elizabeth Street.
The board did so because Harry Connick Jr. is donating $1,500 to the city to use for the opera house.
The city has worked for years to fix the exterior of the historic structure, but doesn’t have the money needed for major renovations to the inside of the building.
Connick is making the donation because he filmed a music video inside the Sterling Opera House Feb. 1. Click here for a previous Valley Indy story.
