A new thrift store with the noblest of noble missions opened on Elizabeth Street Thursday.
Proceeds from the Starts and Stripes will benefit “No Vet Left Behind,” a Derby non-profit group that provides transitional housing and support services for military veterans.
“There’s a huge need for No Vet Left Behind,” Derby Mayor Anthony Staffieri said. “With me being a vet, it especially means a lot.”
State and local officials marked the store’s opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning.
Those in attendance included state representatives Linda Gentile and Themis Klarides and Ansonia Mayor James Della Volpe.
Della Volpe thanked the founders of No Vet Left Behind, Mary and George Porter, for opening the store at 110 Elizabeth St.
“I’d like to thank Mary and George for this tremendous tribute to our vets,” Della Volpe said.
Gentile discussed the countless issues facing veterans.
“Obviously we have a huge problem with homelessness with vets, with vets finding jobs and with veterans transitioning back to the home environment,” she said. “This is a wonderful way of providing a resource for those local vets. I thank Mary and George for their commitment and I wish them the best of luck.”
Mary Porter said that the No Vet Left Behind is working toward opening three transitional houses in Derby, Naugatuck and West Haven. Proceeds earned from thrift shop will help the agency open the houses. She also said that she will have another office for No Vets Left Behind located at the thrift shop. They already have an office at 59 Elizabeth St., suite 204a.
