Derby To Auction Tax Delinquent Properties

Ten property owners who owe the city a combined $427,000 in back taxes will see their properties go to public auction Oct. 13.

The list of properties range from single-family houses to the building that houses Over the Hill, a bar at 131 Hawkins St.

This is the first time the city has organized an auction to collect on back taxes.

Tax Collector Cinda Buchter said it’s her responsibility to collect taxes.

It is my auction — the tax collector’s auction. Not City Hall or the mayor’s, so don’t get mad at him,” Buchter said.

Buchter said she’s sympathetic to the 10 people who will see their properties go auction. The list is hanging in Derby City Hall.

They (the owners) have had every opportunity to bring those taxes up to date and have not,” Buchter said. In some cases, taxes haven’t been paid in years.

Buchter wouldn’t detail the criteria used to get properties on the auction list. She said she consulted with city officials and attorney Adam J. Cohen of Pullman and Comley, LLC.
