Derby WPCA Begins ‘Smoke Testing’ Project

As part of an ongoing study the WPCA will begin smoke testing of the sewer system on July 15 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

These tests will help to determine the sources of rain water and groundwater entering the sewer system.

The testing will continue until Aug. 30 at which time a notice of completion will be posted.

The schedule and location of testing will be posted on the Derby website as well as at City Hall on a weekly basis.

Homeowners will be notified 24 – 48 hrs prior to testing beginning in their neighborhood and a flyer will be posted on the door or mail box.

The smoke being used is non-toxic and dissipates quickly.

It is advisable that if homeowners have toilets or drains that are not in use they plug them or fill the traps with water as to avoid any smoke from entering the home.
