Derby WPCA Meets For First Time Since Raising Sewer Rates

The Derby Water Pollution Control Authority meets for the first time tonight (July 18) since new, more expensive sewer rates went into affect.

The new rate structure came along as Derby went through a revaluation that saw some residents see steep increases in their property taxes.

The sewer bill increase frustrated some Derby residents and commercial property owners who said members of the WPCA did not take extra steps to tell residents they would be paying higher bills this year.

Earlier this month Derby Mayor Anthony Staffieri said residents with questions about their sewer bills should attend tonight’s meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. in Derby City Hall.

WPCA Chairman Leo DiSorbo told the Connecticut Post earlier this month:

The increases are needed to raise the $600,000 to $700,000 in interest the city would pay on the estimated $12 million to $15 million in bonding for several capital improvement projects. The issue will go to a referendum in November, he said.”

The agenda for tonight’s meeting — which includes a public portion,” where taxpayers can speak their minds — is posted below:
