Derby Youth Services Gets United Way Grant

Derby Bureau of Youth Services has received a Special Needs Grant through the Valley United Way.

This grant will help to greatly support a new Career Exploration and Student Success Plan at the Derby Middle School.

This year long program will focus on Academic direction and career options as they pertain to the global economy. This Success program will also focus on positive social and emotional engagement in school activities such as making effective choices and decisions.

Students will be able to complete computerized interest and ability inventories which will help them to identify options for possible career paths. They will identify skills and education direction necessary to match their career interests.

This will be done through the use of special career software that students will be trained to use year round.

Students will create their own career path portfolio with a targeted success plan that will follow them throughout their secondary education.

A career fair will be held at the school in May where the students will have the opportunity to talk with professionals working in a variety of careers from Medical to engineering, law and vocational opportunities.

The Career Exploration and Student Success program was developed through a collaborative effort with School Officials and the Derby Youth Bureau.
