A discarded cigarette triggered a fire that damaged a house on Nolan Road Thursday morning.
The Ansonia Fire Department was sent to 25 Nolan Road at about 11 a.m. after a resident from a nearby street called 911 and said smoke was billowing from the front of the house.
There were no injuries. No one was inside the house at the time of the fire except a very friendly pit bull. He was freed by firefighters and cared for by Ansonia police officers until the owner arrived home.
Ansonia Fire Marshal Ray Tingley said a plastic coffee can was being used as a cigarette container on a small porch just outside the front door. A butt had been tossed in there about 8 a.m.
Unfortunately, it started smoldering inside the container and caused the fire.
The fire itself was small and was quickly extinguished, said Ansonia firefighter Craig Smart.
“It was a small fire that was contained mostly to the exterior wall. It just breached the inside of the house,” he said.
