Truck Snaps Utility Pole; Division Street Closed

PHOTO: Tina UgasDivision Street remains closed between Wakelee and Westfield avenues, after a tractor trailer truck pulled down utility wires on the road Wednesday morning.

The driver, who was not identified, was backing into the parking lot for Greenberg Orthodontics at 210 Division Street when the top of the truck got caught up in the service wires connected to the building, Lt. Andrew Cota said.

As the truck pulled on the wires, a utility pole across the street — where the wires connected — snapped in half from the pressure. A utility pole closer to the Route 8 off-ramp was also damaged in the wire tangle, police said.

The incident occurred at about 10:20 a.m. The driver was from United Natural Foods.

Bob Kaesmann, line crew supervisor for United Illuminating, said the damage included two broken utility poles, three transformers and the service wire going to the orthodontics office.

Derby and Ansonia police and fire departments were called to the scene.

Chandra Jakka, assistant store manager for Hancock Pharmacy said he witnessed the incident from inside the pharmacy.

I see the poles dragging down and I went crazy and was on the telephone by the time I realized what was happening,” Jakka said.

The parking lot is shared by both the orthodonitic office and the pharmacy.

Cota said no ticket was given to the driver because the incident happened on private property.

The driver’s insurance will have to pay for the costs to repair the wires, Cota said.

Cota said that repair could take several hours, as one utility pole needs to be replaced.

No one was injured in the incident.
