– UPDATE, 4:30 p.m. — Police announced Friday they have made an arrest in connection to the shooting of a dog found injured off Nutmeg Avenue on Friday morning.
Police posted the following information on Facebook at 4:18 p.m. Friday:
“ARREST MADE in the German Shepherd shooting. Details to follow in subsequent press release. Suspects are, unfortunately, the dog’s owners. Thank you to ALL who reached out with your concerns and offers to help.”

The injured dog was found at 2:20 a.m. off Nutmeg Avenue, a road accessible from Hawthorne Avenue.
Earlier version of this story follows:
Police said a dog found in the Derby Picnic Grove on Nutmeg Avenue overnight Friday had been shot at least twice.
Multiple bullet casings were at the scene. The dog is expected to survive, Lt. Justin Stanko said.
“One bullet shattered his front leg and another is still embedded in his shoulder,” Stanko said.
The circumstances are under investigation. Police said a motorist driving on Nutmeg Avenue at 2:20 a.m. came across the injured animal and contacted police.
Police are hoping to locate the dog’s owner. The owner, or anyone with information about this incident, should call Derby police at 203 735 7811.
The dog is a black and brown German Shepherd. The dog is an unneutered male, police said. Police said he looked to be anywhere from 8 months to two years old.
The dog was not microchipped, a device that would have owner and other info.
The dog will need surgery to remove the bullet from his leg. Anyone who wants to help pay for the dog’s medical bills should contact Shelton Animal Control at (203) 924‑2501 and press 1 (the City of Derby uses animal control services from Shelton).
Nutmeg Avenue is a steep hill that previously served as a back entrance to the Derby High School/Middle School campus. There are now gates that are usually closed at the top to prevent through traffic.
Nutmeg is accessible from Hawthorne Avenue. The top of Nutmeg Avenue has a basketball court and picnic grove, along with Little League baseball fields.
