Dog Used To Rescue Woman In Derby

Kevin the rescue dog tracked down a woman who went missing from Griffin Hospital Monday night.

Storm ambulance received a call from an Emmett Avenue resident at about 7 p.m.

The caller said a distraught woman was on the road, screaming for someone to call an ambulance.

Police and an ambulance crew arrived. They were told the woman had walked off into the woods. At the same time, officials received word that a person seeking help at Griffin Hospital had just walked out of the building.

A quick search didn’t yield results, so David Lenart, veteran Storm member, went home and picked up Kevin, the organization’s search and rescue dog.

Kevin picked up a scent and tracked the woman down to a spot in the woods in Ansonia, alongside Route 8.

The woman, 51, did not have any physical injuries. She was taken back to the hospital.

Storm Ambulance received Kevin in 2006, thanks to a donation from the Derby Wal-Mart and support from the Seymour Veterinary Hospital.

Lenart said the dog — which is half labrador, half golden retriever — is used for rescues about two or three times a year.
