Valley residents joined together in downtown Ansonia March 29 for a Procession of the Cross ceremony in honor of Good Friday, which marks the crucifixion of Jesus Christ in the Christian tradition.
A group of about 30 people formed the procession, which started at Veteran’s Park and walked up Main Street to the Ansonia Armory on North State Street, where the service concluded.
Rev. Marcia Eveland, of the First Congregational Church in Ansonia said, “This all started about five years ago when I said to the episcopal priest at the time that I thought a procession would be an interesting and good thing to do.”
The procession is organized so, at every block up to the armory, there was a black ribbon tied to either a street lamp or sign. Each black ribbon signified a stop in the procession, where worshippers recited sayings of Jesus on the cross.
“I think it is nice,” Marta Marin, Seymour resident, said. “It’s nice for people to come and pray together. I bring my kids every year.”
The Good Friday Ecumenical Service was sponsored by Ansonia churches: Christ Episcopal Church, Church of the Assumption, Clinton A.M.E. Zion Church, First Congregational Church, First United Methodist Church, as well as Ansonia’s Salvation Army.
