The following were recent Derby criminal matters:
Drug Bust
A number of people were arrested on drug charges after police received a report of people possibly using heroin in the parking lot of the AutoZone on Division Street in Derby.
Police received the report Wednesday, July 18. Two suspects were apprehended in the AutoZone parking lot. Two were apprehended in the Burger King parking lot across the street.
One of the suspects had 26 bags of heroin in his possession, police said.
Police also said they recovered drug paraphernalia from the suspects, including a syringe loaded with heroin.
Those charged were:
Brennan Yanarella, of Derby: Possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of heroin (26 bags), and sale of heroin. He also had $323 in cash, which was seized, police said.
Michael Cuevas, of Seymour: Possession of narcotics — he allegedly had Xanax pills without a prescription.
William Corey, of Shelton: Possession of narcotics (crack cocaine), possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
Kate Farrell, of Shelton: Possession of narcotics (crack cocaine), possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
All four suspects are scheduled to appear at Superior Court in Derby July 27.
Man Sentenced For Groping
A Derby man received two years jail, sentence suspended, and three years probation for groping a 13-year-old girl in Derby last year.
Jose Luna, 34, was sentenced Monday (July 23) in Superior Court in Derby.
He pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of fourth-degree sexual assault.
The sentence means that Luna could face two years in prison if he gets into trouble with the law within the next three years.
The incidents happened in August 2011, while the victim was visiting a friend at Luna’s residence.
