It may be called the Inaugural Housey River Duck Race, but thousands of ducks will be dumped into the Naugatuck River Sunday.
That’s the day St. Mary-St. Michael School rescheduled its first duck race fundraiser, after strong currents in the Housatonic River snapped the collection device shortly before the race was supposed to begin on June 20.
The race will be held at 6 p.m. June 28. The ducks will be dropped into the Naugatuck River at the Division Street Bridge, near BJ’s Wholesale Club in Derby. The collection point will be at the Route 34 overpass, near Tailgators and the Derby train station.
Be sure to line up along the River Walk for a great view of the action.
The race was supposed to take place during Derby Day, and was scheduled to happen rain or shine. But after days of heavy rain, the Housatonic River had strong currents June 20 that snapped the collection boon and forced the race to be postponed. Race organizers said the delay was not because of the rain that afternoon.
The location was changed because the new starting point on the Naugatuck is not as wide as the spot on the Housatonic River June 20.
No more duck tickets are being sold for the event, as per state gaming rules.
“We’re hoping everyone will come out and join us again,” said Grace Torres, president of the school’s Home-School Association.
