SNOW, PART VII

Shelton buses were unable to travel on certain city streets Wednesday afternoon because of the snow.

The school district sent a robo-call” and posted a notice on its website notifying parents their children may be dropped off at the next closest bus stop.

Laura Dempsey, transportation coordinator for Shelton Public Schools, said buses got stuck in several places during previous snow storms.

This time, they decided not to drive on the particularly treacherous roads.

Last time they did have difficulties,” Dempsey said. They were stuck waiting for sanders, it was pretty hairy.”

This time, Dempsey said, they quickly put together a list of the streets they knew they were having so much difficulty on.”

The Shelton roads included:

  • Sunset Drive
  • Rocky Rest Road
  • Grove Street
  • Jennifer Court
  • Belmont Ave.
  • Yukatak Trail
  • Wooster Street
  • Elm Street
  • Plaskon Drive
  • Dogwood Lane
  • Valley Road
  • Kings Highway
  • Pawtucket Ave
  • Nicholdale Road
  • Brook Street
  • Roberts Street

Dempsey said at 3:10 p.m., the buses were finishing their routes, without any reported problems.

They’re creeping along, running extremely slow,” Dempsey said.

Early Day, Everywhere

Schools in Ansonia, Derby, Oxford, Seymour and Shelton sent home students early today due to the seventh snow storm of the season.

The snow started falling at 10 a.m., stopped at about 11:15 a.m., only to start up again at about 2 p.m.

The video below shows road conditions in Ansonia, Derby and Seymour at 11:30 a.m.

The route: Ansonia Main Street, left onto Route 115 north up to Seymour, up West Church Road, past Bungay School, then into Derby via Derby Neck Road to Hawthorne Avenue.

Story continues after the video:

The region is under a winter storm warning until 6 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

In Derby, the city’s Parking Authority brought in crews to remove 12-foot-high piles of snow on top of the Thompson Place parking garage.

In general, the garage is in poor shape.

Courtesy Derby Parking AuthorityWhile a new snow storm moves into our area, the Derby Public Works is busy removing 12 foot high piles of snow from the upper level of the 2 Thompson place parking garage. The Derby Municipal Parking Authority is taking proactive steps in clearing heavy snow from its aging multi-deck garage to prevent a potential collapse,” Derby Parking Authority Director Leo Moscato, Jr. said in an e‑mail.

The forecast from the National Weather Service calls for 6 to 9 inches of snow by Thursday. Wind gusts could reach 25 to 35 mph.

Gov. Dannel Malloy was scheduled to activate the state’s emergency operation center at the state armory in Hartford at 4 p.m.

I was on a call this morning with Connecticut’s emergency responders and transportation officials to ensure we are prepared for the weather headed our way,” Malloy said in a prepared statement. The answer is: we are. No matter how frequently we’ve been through this, we want to be certain that we are ready, and citizens know what they need to do to stay safe and secure. I’m urging residents to heed any municipal parking orders, clear snow away from fire hydrants and on top of their roofs, and to take it slow while driving.”
