Update: Elderly Woman OK After House Fire In Ansonia

ANSONIA — An elderly woman was taken to Griffin Hospital after being rescued from a house fire on Spring Street Tuesday night, officials said.

The woman’s condition was not known as of 9:25 p.m. UPDATE: City police released a statement at 11:17 p.m. saying the 90-year-old woman was treated and released for minor injuries from the fire.

A second resident who was home at the time of the fire declined medical treatment.

Ansonia Police Lt. Patrick Lynch said two police officers were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene of the fire, which was reported as 44 Spring St., off Platt Street.

The two police officers had — along with Ansonia Fire Department Assistant Chief Anthony DeLucia — rescued the two residents from the burning building. The two police officers were identified as Sgt. Alex Barreira and Sgt. Ed Magera.

The fire was reported around 7:38 p.m.

The first firefighters on scene saw lots of flames coming from the rear of the single-family house, along with billowing smoke.

DeLucia said firefighters were able to get water on the flames within minutes. The bulk of the fire was knocked down by about 7:51 p.m., and was declared under control by 8:03 p.m., according to emergency radio dispatches. The rear of the home was badly damaged by flames.

The temperature was 18 degrees during the fire. A crew from Ansonia Public Works was called to the scene to help with ice. The Red Cross was also notified.

Firefighters from Seymour and Derby responded to the fire, too.

The Ansonia Fire Marshal’s Office was on scene investigating the cause and origin as of Tuesday night.
