Election Day 2020: So Far, So Good

Derby resident Larry Dwyer submitted this photo showing lines outside the Bradley School Tuesday morning.

The wait was probably longer than previous elections, but no major issues were reported in Ansonia, Derby or Seymour as of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Election Day 2020 is marked by a hotly-contested U.S. Presidential race between Donald Trump and Joe Biden. The race has already shattered records in terms of ballots cast by absentee, and the top-of-the-ticket race is expected to bring lots of voters out by the time the polls close at 8 p.m.

It is also a truly historic Election Day, as the nation votes amid a stubborn COVID-19 pandemic that was first detected in Connecticut in March.

Election Day looked certainly different — with voters and volunteer poll workers wearing masks for protection, and voters being asked to use hand sanitizer before making their way into polling places.

The polling places were busy from 6 a.m. through the afternoon. Wait times of up to 30 minutes were reported shortly after polls opened.

The Town of Seymour reported a malfunctioning ballot tabulator at the Chatfield-LoPresti school Tuesday morning. It was not a major event, and the offending machine was replaced.

Voters were instructed to deposit their ballots in the auxiliary compartment on the side of the tabulator,” according to a Facebook post by the Office of First Selectwomen Annmarie Drugonis. The malfunctioning tabulator has been replaced. All votes that were deposited earlier will be recounted with the new tabulator to ensure an accurate count.”

The Derby City/Town Clerk reported that 49.4 percent of all registered Derby voters had cast ballots by 12 p.m. Tuesday.
