A fire that displaced a family in Derby has been ruled accidental, Derby Fire Marshal Phil Hawks said Wednesday.
The blaze started within the electrical wiring in a front bedroom on the home’s second floor, Hawks said.
Precisely why the wiring malfunctioned isn’t known.
“It looks like an electrical malfunction started the fire. It spread from the front bedroom and since a door was open, the fire spread toward a back bedroom,” Hawks said.
One woman suffered a minor injury while escaping from the house, which is at 146 Park Ave.
Hawks said the second floor suffered extensive fire damage, but the house itself is structurally sound. The first floor has water damage. No one can stay in the home at the moment. Representatives from the property owner’s insurance company were on the scene Tuesday.
As part of the repair process, the remaining electrical wiring in the house will have to be checked out to make sure it is safe, Hawks said.
Derby firefighters and emergency medical responders were sent to the fire at 7:20 a.m. Tuesday and saw heavy smoke and fire coming from the home. Ansonia and Shelton firefighters responded to the scene as well.
