Derby firefighters rushed to the scene of a three-family house on Gilbert Street where the electric wires were arcing onto the roof.
There were no injuries.
Firefighters were on standby at 2 p.m. at the house, off Route 34 near St. Michael’s Church, waiting for crews from United Illuminating Co. to arrive and shut the power down to the house.
The wires were arcing probably due to age, or perhaps from the heavy rainstorm that hit the area Thursday afternoon, a firefighter said.
A building inspector was called to the scene.
Neighbors gathered to watch the intermittent arcing.
At about 1 p.m. Thursday, power went out for about five minutes for all of Ansonia, Derby and parts of Shelton.
The power failure lasted about five minutes for most and up to 20 minutes for others.
It was unclear what precisely caused the outage, other than that it was weather-related.
As of 2:30 p.m., about 800 United Illuminating customers in Shelton were still without power.
