Five people who tried to rescue an elderly couple from a house fire in October will received “Everyday Hero Awards” from the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Brotherhood Awards Committee this month.
An awards ceremony on Dec. 16 will honor worthy individuals who risked their lives in an Oct. 2nd fire on the North End of Ansonia to save Laura McMichael and attempt to save the late Rufus “Fred” McMichael.
The five are civilian Christopher Esteves, fireman Judd Blaze, and Ansonia police officers Edward Magera, Phillip Landona, Jr. and Bernard Oksenberg.
The ceremony, to be held at 6 p.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church of Ansonia, CT , 243 Pershing Drive Ansonia, is the first event of a series planned for the Brotherhood Awards Committee’s 25th year.
The Committee is scheduling several programs beginning December 2009 and January 2011.
In the spring of 2010, Glenn Leonard, formerly of The Temptations, returns to Ansonia after 13 years as our special guest to entertain as the Committee presents the “2010 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Unsung Hero Award.;
In the summer of 2010, the committee will host an event for children residing in the Lower Naugatuck Valley and in the fall a luncheon will be given for the Valley seniors.
Kiah Goldson of Ansonia, who recently released her first CD, entitled “Once Apon a Time,” will be on the December program singing her hit “Falling Together.”
The chairperson of the Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. Brotherhood Award Committee is Ralphine Siggars Ford; Vice Chairpersons are Mayor James DellaVolpe, Mayor of Ansonia, Atty. James E. Cohen; and Rev. David E. Penn, Sr., Pastor of the Macedonia Baptist Church; Surether Belton, Events Coordinator; and Claude L. Perry, Sr., Program Executive Advisor.
All recipients from prior years are requested to attend and participate in all of the events.
