Fairfield Man Charged With Shelton Sexual Assault

Shelton police arrested a Fairfield man Monday (Aug. 6) on charges he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl.

The man, Kerry Hugh McGuire, 38, was charged with two counts each of first-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor, in addition to a single count of violating a protective order.

In a prepared news release, police said that McGuire was arrested after a six-week investigation and that the charges are related to a 14-year-old victim.”

The investigation is ongoing, according to the release.

Detective Ben Trabka said the victim was a female, but said he could not release further details Tuesday.

McGuire, was arrested about 10:30 a.m. Monday by Detective Michael Fusco and held on $150,000 bond.

He was arraigned Tuesday at Superior Court in Derby, where Judge Burton Kaplan kept McGuire’s bond at $150,000 and ordered the affidavit supporting McGuire’s arrest sealed.

Judge Kaplan also issued a protective order in the case and ordered that sealed as well. He ordered McGuire not to have any contact or be within 100 yards of the protected person” named in the order.

The case was continued to August 27, at which point it may be transferred to Superior Court in Milford, which handles more serious matters.

McGuire was convicted last month of second-degree threatening and was given a suspended one-year jail sentence with two years of probation in connection to an arrest in Shelton in August 2010, according to Judicial Branch records.

In court Tuesday, a bail commissioner also said McGuire was convicted in 1997 of marijuana possession and interfering with a police officer.

Public Defender Paul Eschuk said McGuire has lived in the area his entire life, noted his fairly minimal” criminal record, and was staying with his parents and a brother in Fairfield before his arrest Monday.

Eschuk said he doubted McGuire would make the $150,000 bond.
