A report of smoke billowing from the former St. Michael’s school on Derby Avenue Wednesday turned out to be a faulty boiler, firefighters said.
Fire Marshal Phil Hawks spotted smoking coming out of the eaves of the building at about 4:15 p.m., said Derby Fire Department Chief James Butler, Jr.
Firefighters responded and searched for the source.
“There’s a steam leak in the boiler. Somehow it was coming up the drain pipe,” Butler said.
Church officials are contacting a repair company to fix the problem.
Firefighters were clearing the scene as of 4:45 p.m.
